Battery Testing

Adiabatic testing
Thermal Hazard Technology offer a full range of adiabatic testing using the Accelerating Rate Calorimeter together with specialised options.

A full range of Battery Testing can be carried out within our laboratory.

Components of batteries can be tested for their stability and exothermicity using our Accelerating Rate Calorimeter under usual operating conditions.

Batteries of all shapes and sizes can be tested with or without using a specially designed closed and sealed battery holder (button batteries, AA, 4/5A and 18650 have been recently tested in addition to larger battery packs). Without the closed holder, the battery is suspended within the calorimeter and no pressure data is obtained. Using a closed battery holder pressure data is obtained but some heat is lost to heat the holder (a correction is applied).

Batteries can be tested at various stages of charge.

With 2 or 4 wire connection and measurement batteries can be charged, discharged and cycled during the thermal test. Voltage and current values can be set to simulate normal conditions and thermal changes will be quantified. The change in thermal effect with time or cycle number can be determined over an extended period to give information on lifecycle of batteries and their efficiency of energy conversion. Such tests are routinely carried out within the THT Accelerating Rate Calorimeter using the KSU option.

Abuse type testing will determine heat output when the battery is shorted, overcharged or overdischarged. Such tests are routinely carried out in the THT Accelerating Rate Calorimeter using the BSU option.

The full range of tests that can be carried out with the THT Accelerating Rate Calorimeter with battery test options allow all information on the safety, efficiency and lifetime of batteries to be determined.

Reaction Calorimetry
Using both the
mRC™ and MRC™ allows THT to offer reaction calorimetry testing to meet all requirements.

Screening
The development of the RSD™ allows quick and accurate screening to determine potential thermal hazards in a cost-efficient manner.

Vent-Sizing
Using specialised Accelerating Rate Calorimetry options allows THT to offer vent-size determination in line with the current DIERS methodology.
